Petr Novák
founded the Doupě o.p.s. Ceramic Centre together with Mirka Randová, where they devoted themselves not only to their ceramic work, but also to lecturing. Both of them have participated in many symposiums and exhibitions of ceramics and are regularly invited to the Tea Bowl Festival in South Korea. They work (now separately) with the technique of firing in a wood-fired kiln and mix their own glazes from materials available in the Czech Republic.
"By firing in a wood kiln
we are not only continuing the tradition of our ancestors, but also trying to create works that carry more than just technological uniqueness; works that speak the language of our souls, ceramics that reflect our approach to life. Each piece is begun on the potter's wheel, then modified and finished. The glazes we mix ourselves are selected and tested with this type of firing in mind. The alchemy of glazes, fire and clay then results in unique pieces. It is a journey of search and discovery, a journey of harmony with nature, a challenge to symmetry and lifeless factory production. Wood firing at 1300°C is the culmination of one stage in the life of a ceramic product and also a celebration of its next journey ..."
Petr Novák on his work:
I've been drinking tea longer than I've been spinning clay, so my interest and focus on tea ware, which belongs with tea as much as clean water or good company, was natural from the beginning of my ceramic journey. Along my journey I seek the boundaries between the natural imperfection of wabi and craftsmanship. The connection between the taste of the tea and the material, the union of unobtrusive aesthetics and functionality. I enlist the help of a living fire, a phoenix, which endows each bowl and pot with its own mood and life.
