Green tea from the summer harvest at the Jasbire garden in the Ilam region of eastern Nepal. The long, longitudinally rolled leaves, which are silvery-green in colour, consist of a downy bud and two young leaves. The light, golden-green infusion has a very delicate, sweetly citrusy flavour with notes of basil and green pepper.
How to brew Jasbire Numafung tea
Use 5 g of tea leaves per 0.5 l of water that has been brought to a boil and cooled to 65–70 ᵒC; steep for 1 minute. Feel free to experiment with steeping time, water temperature, and the amount of tea leaves. You can also read our articles on tea preparation and water quality.
Jasbire Garden
is an innovative tea project and processing centre situated in the remote and rugged mountains of the famous Ilam tea district in eastern Nepal. The small workshop is situated at an altitude of around 1,800 metres above sea level, not far from the sacred Lake Maipokhari. The garden was established as a community project with the aim of processing tea leaves from dozens of local smallholder farmers in the surrounding hills, who cultivate tea plants exclusively using organic farming methods. Jasbire is renowned amongst lovers of Himalayan teas for its boldness in experimentation. Under the guidance of founder Sharad Subba, limited batches of unique, multi-layered orthodox teas are handcrafted here in extreme high-altitude conditions – ranging from traditional black teas through refreshing white teas to unconventional oolongs. The word ‘Numafung’ translates as ‘beautiful flower’ and partly refers to a significant Nepalese film from 2001 (directed by Nabin Subba), which captures the life, culture and traditions of a young woman from the Limbu ethnic group in the hills of eastern Nepal.
